Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 500 g lean beef mince
  • 1 green bell pepper deseeded and finely diced
  • 1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 120 ml passata
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce ensure halal certified, or substitute with a non-alcoholic, mushroom-based alternative
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 large baguette or ciabatta loaf approx. 300g, sliced lengthwise and then into 2.5cm thick pieces
  • 100 g unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cloves garlic crushed (for garlic bread)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped (for garlic bread)
  • 200 g mature cheddar cheese grated
  • 100 g mozzarella cheese grated

Method

  1. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling: Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until it softens and turns translucent, releasing a sweet aroma. Stir in the minced garlic and diced green bell pepper and cook for another 3 minutes until the pepper starts to soften slightly, giving off a fresh, earthy smell.
  2. Brown the Mince: Add the lean beef mince to the pan. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook, stirring occasionally, until it's completely browned and no pink remains. You'll notice the mince changing colour from vibrant red to a rich brown, and the pan will sizzle as the moisture evaporates. Drain off any excess fat.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Stir in the chopped tomatoes, passata, tomato puree, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce (or alternative), smoked paprika, and dried oregano. Season generously with salt and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for at least 15-20 minutes. This allows the flavours to meld beautifully, creating a rich, thick sauce that smells wonderfully savoury.
  4. Preheat Oven and Prepare Garlic Bread: While the Sloppy Joe mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan/Gas Mark 5). In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, crushed garlic, and chopped fresh parsley. Spread this fragrant garlic butter generously over one side of each sliced baguette piece.
  5. Assemble the Bake: Arrange half of the garlic bread slices, butter-side up, in a single layer at the bottom of a large, oven-safe baking dish. Spoon the warm, thick Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over the garlic bread. Sprinkle about half of the mixed grated cheddar and mozzarella cheeses over the Sloppy Joe layer. Then, place the remaining garlic bread slices on top, butter-side up, and cover with the rest of the grated cheese. You'll see the vibrant colours of the meat, bread, and cheese creating an inviting layered look.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top. The edges of the garlic bread should be crisp and golden, and a wonderful aroma of garlic, cheese, and savoury mince will fill your kitchen. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the cheese to set slightly.

Notes

Ensure Worcestershire sauce is halal certified for a halal meal, or substitute with a suitable non-alcoholic, mushroom-based alternative. For an extra kick, a pinch of chili flakes can be added to the sloppy joe mixture. Let the bake rest for a few minutes after taking it out of the oven to allow the cheese to set slightly, making it easier to serve.
